I'm Kevin, an energetic and service-oriented computer science student with a history of achievement in formulating projects and conducting research at top universities. I'm currently pursuing my education at UC Berkeley, where I intend to major in computer science and continue the never-ending journey of becoming an engineer. As a motivated leader engaged in the Bay Area community with strong organizational and prioritization abilities, my experience includes more than 800 hours of community service serving various nonprofits as well as working with multiple institutions to pioneer educational programs and events.

    Harvard University

    Working under Dr. Wendy Guan in collaboration with Harvard’s Center for Geographical Analysis on a project seeking to uncover and understand how COVID-19 has impacted mortality categorized under different causes through collecting relevant datasets and exploring geographical patterns. Our research team will conduct a cold/hot spot analysis over time and space to better understand and explain the impact of COVID-19 and work towards developing a publicly accessible spatiotemporal dashboard for data visualization as well as a research publication to report our analysis and findings. Employing Python, ArcGIS, and Tableau for data visualization.

    Establishing and executing a focus group to evaluate the successes/failures of the Standard and Premium packages during the 2019-20 admissions cycle. Collaborating with the marketing and business teams to develop a product sales strategy for the Deluxe package while formulating and implementing a product tailored for the editor onboarding process to save company time and resources.

    University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

    Researching multimodal detection of deepfake videos using PyTorch; working with signal processing and ensemble methods to perform sound classification. Developing a model with PredRNN++ by modifying its architecture to perform classification. Improving current state-of-the-art prediction results by assessing a model on synthetic and real datasets through implementing a gradient highway architecture. Co-authoring research paper currently pending publication to peer-reviewed journal: IEEE Transactions on Communications.

    Launched a global hackathon initiative with over 700 attendees encompassing 6+ countries & students from over 200 universities. Oversaw partnerships with collegiate organizations as well as corporate partners to raise $20k in fiscal sponsorships and prizes for the event from the ground up within a rapid growth period of two months. Drove operations through establishing community engagement workshops & expanding brand presence through cross-promotion marketing campaigns.

    Working with 11 students across the nation under Harvard University’s student-led Coronavirus Visualization Team in association with the Cyber Threat Coalition to launch a data-based project investigating the impact of COVID-19 on cybersecurity. Providing insightful experience-based contributions and conducting data visualization research on cyberattack trends using Pandas, MatPlotLib, and Tableau.

    Spearheaded research project for Dartmouth’s Institute for Security, Technology and Society (ISTS) as part as outreach for the NSA and NSF’s GenCyber Grants Program. Authored research publication on social engineering and data exfiltration techniques that will be published on the Dartmouth ISTS website prior to GenCyber 2021 as an example of exemplary student work.

    Granted a scholarship for the research of data science regression models including nonnegative garrote, LASSO, and elastic net regularization with application in applied mathematics and probability theory under Professor Lulu Kang. Utilized R to compare different NG approaches with and without marginality principles via comprehensive simulation studies to determine which approach outperforms the other.

    Through this 10-week leadership program sponsored by the UN, NASA, and NOAA paired with lessons from the Harvard Kennedy School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I will gain skills and knowledge changing the way I see and interact with the world. As an ambassador-in-training, I focus on self-awareness as leaders can achieve their goals only if they know what they want and why. From there, I will learn how to tell stories that motivate action, negotiate agreements that advance my interests, and communicate messages that make an impact.

    Coronavirus Visualization Community

    Working within the Coronavirus Visualization Community to address the information overload around the spread and impact of COVID-19. Assisted and supported the formation of partnerships between CVC and organizations including the Harvard Center for Geospatial Analysis, COVID Foundation, and MIT Innovation Initiative while promoting and managing a community consisting of members from over 300 schools working on over 25 different projects. Helped set up, implement, and manage the CVC Intercollegiate Discord server community.

    Working within Project Lockdown (an IO Foundation initiative) to provide an interactive tracker and an open API to monitor government responses to the COVID-19 pandemic globally with a focus on the impact of such policies on human and digital rights. Exploring available funding and opportunities to sustain the project through identifying and engaging with potential external partners, preparing grant proposals, and coordinating with the Resource Allocation team.

    Successfully launched a new youth group of over 200 students with a focus on community service and the preservation of Asian-American culture and traditions. Charted and implemented a computer science curriculum based on Python for nomadic students in China employing Raspberry Pi computers.     Received an award from IBM and the Clinton Global Initiative University out of 225 projects submitted for developing a mobile tele-health application employing state-of-the-art deep autoencoders for video compression coupled with hardware acceleration inside of mobile devices, Gradle, and GCP that allows people in rural areas to remain connected with remote healthcare professionals.
